Purpose▾
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Winding Engine Driver. A Winding Engine Driver operates a winding engine to transport persons, materials, explosives and minerals to and from the underground workings of a mine. A qualified learner will be able to: • Operate a winding engine to transport persons, materials, explosives and minerals to and from the underground workings of a mine.
Rationale▾
The mining industry requires the transportation of persons, material, explosives and minerals by means of winding engines to and from the underground workings of the mine in vertical or incline shafts. This qualification makes it possible for the individuals to carry out such winding operations using a winding engine. The qualification also meets the requirements of the Department of Mineral Resources for the purposes of licensing such winding engine drivers. Most of the learners will already have been employed in the mining industry and will continue to find employment there. This qualification will also improve the standard of training and assessment across all sites. This will result in a better operational quality and safety as well as improving the mobility of winding engine drivers. In general the career progression for winding engine drivers will be to occupations in other parts of the mine, e.g. training, engineering or mining operations.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment: Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record. RPL for access to the qualification: Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements. Entry requirements: • An Occupational Certificate: Onsetter qualification. OR • Level 3 with mathematics and science.
