Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to function as a Retail Supervisor. A Retail Supervisor controls and co-ordinates the work performance of a team of employees operating within a specific area in a retail or wholesale business. The qualified learner will exhibit the following key attributes: team leadership, attention to detail, good communication, ethical, responsible, and consistent. A qualified learner will be able to: • Supervise staff operating in a wholesale or retail operation. • Supervise the implementation and maintenance of retail or wholesale operations. • Analyse causes of customer complaints and resolve these complaints in a manner that promotes customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Rationale

A retail supervisor qualification at NQF Level 4 is essential for the South African retail sector to improve its competitiveness, productivity, and overall performance. Retail Supervisors play a critical role in managing store operations, overseeing staff, driving sales, managing inventory, and ensuring excellent customer service. They are responsible for ensuring that the store meets its financial targets, complies with regulations, and maintains high quality standards. Individuals who may be interested in pursuing a Retail Supervisor qualification in South Africa include Retail Sales Associates who have been working in the industry for some time and want to advance their careers, Assistant Store Managers who are looking to move up to a supervisory role, existing Retail Supervisors who want to improve their knowledge and skills to become more effective in their roles and individuals who have a passion for the retail industry and want to start their careers as retail supervisors. Overall, anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in retail management and wants to improve their knowledge and skills would be a good candidate for a Retail Supervisor qualification in South Africa. There are two similar qualifications currently are registered on the NQF, the National Certificate: Wholesale and Retail Operations Supervision and the Occupational Certificate: Retail Supervisor both at NQF Level 4. A process was initiated to review the occupational qualification and replace the legacy qualification given the identified full spectrum of supervisory activities required to function as a Retail Supervisor. By having a formal qualification in retail management, supervisors will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their roles effectively, efficiently, and ethically. They will be better equipped to manage their teams, develop sales strategies, analyse sales data, manage inventory, and maintain customer satisfaction. This, in turn, will lead to increased productivity, higher profits, and improved customer loyalty, benefiting both the retail sector and the broader economy. Furthermore, the retail sector significantly contributes to employment and economic growth in South Africa, providing jobs to millions of people. By having a qualified retail workforce, the industry will be able to attract and retain skilled workers, creating a more stable and sustainable job market. This will ultimately benefit the broader society by reducing unemployment and poverty rates, increasing tax revenue, and stimulating economic growth. The qualification will provide learners with a practical and theoretical understanding of the retail industry and equip them with essential management skills. By improving their knowledge and skills, learners can advance their careers, earn higher salaries, and make meaningful contributions to the growth and success of the retail sector. This qualification does not require professional registration.

Learning Assumed to be in Place & RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): • RPL for Access to Training/Exemption: Learners may use the RPL process to gain access to training opportunities for a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme if they do not meet the formal, minimum entry requirements for admission. RPL assessment provides an alternative access route into a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme. Such an RPL assessment may be developed, moderated, and conducted by the accredited Skills Development Provider which offers that specific qualification/part qualification/skills programme. Such an assessment must ensure that the learner is able to display the equivalent level of competencies required for access, based on the NQF level descriptors. For exemption from modules through RPL, learners who have gained the stipulated competencies of the modules of a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme through any means of formal, informal, or non-formal learning and/or work experience, may be awarded credits towards relevant modules, and gaps identified for training, which is then concluded. • RPL for Access to the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) or Final Integrated Supervised Assessment (FISA) Learners who have gained the stipulated competencies of the modules of a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme through any means of formal, informal, or non-formal learning and/or work experience, may be awarded credits towards relevant modules, and gaps identified for training, which is then concluded. A valid Statement of Results is required for admission to the EISA in which confirmation of achievement is provided that all internal assessment criteria for all modules in the related curriculum document have been achieved. For a Skills Programme, the accredited Skills Development Provider (SDP) must ensure all modular competency requirements are met prior to the FISA and keep record of such evidence. Upon successful completion of the EISA/FISA, RPL learners will be issued with the QCTO certificate for the qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme. Quality Partners are responsible for ensuring the RPL mechanism and process for qualifications and part-qualification is approved by the QCTO. Entry Requirements: • An NQF Level 3 qualification.
