Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Pipe fitter. A Pipe fitter disassembles, repairs, maintains, fabricates, assembles, installs and quality assures pipe systems in accordance with design and engineering codes and specifications taking into consideration health, safety and environmental requirements. A qualified learner will be able to: • Maintain pipe systems and related components applying removal, inspection and installation techniques in accordance with pre-defined specifications. • Fabricate pipe systems in accordance with relevant specifications. • Participate in quality assurance and testing procedures of pipe systems and related components in accordance with specifications.

Rationale

Pipe fitter is a listed trade incorporated within the South African National Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework. This qualification is designed for that group of learners. The industry has identified a need for a fully-fledged recognised pipe fitting qualification to address the skills requirements and also, to establish a structured curriculum. Most small and major projects throughout the country require qualified pipe fitters. Qualified pipe fitters are likely to be employed by major industries such as marine, petro-chemical, power generation, food and beverage, steel manufacturing, etc. This qualification is aimed at individuals who have recently worked in a relevant occupational context, who have acquired pipe fitting skills in an industrial work environment. Such skills include, but are not limited to, pipe fabrication, installation and maintenance activities. The qualification is also suitable for new entrants to the pipe fitting sector. This qualification will enable individuals to receive full recognition as qualified artisans within the pipe fitting working environment. The pipe fitter qualification can contribute to an individual's career path development within the specific discipline.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment: Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record. RPL for access to the qualification: Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements. Entry Requirements: • Qualification Level 1 with Mathematics and Science.
