Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Packaging Rotary Printing and Re-reeling Flexographic Machine Minder. A Packaging Rotary Printing and Re-reeling Flexographic Machine Minder sets up, operates and maintains web-fed flexographic printing presses to print specified quality printing jobs on a variety of substrates. A qualified learner will be able to: • Set up flexographic printing presses. • Operate flexographic printing presses to specify quality standards for printing jobs on a variety of substrates. • Conduct first-line machine maintenance on flexographic printing presses.

Rationale

The shared purpose of this qualification is to assess and recognise workplace skills acquired with the benefit of formal education and training. Learners who are assessed as competent against this qualification will be competent to act as a Rotary Flexographic Machine Minder within the printing industry. Learners will be able to prepare, operate and maintain rotary flexographic presses i.e. understand and interpret job instructions, maintain production and control waste, whilst maintaining quality. This qualification represents a specialised skill within a printing trade or industry. The qualification contributes to the development of qualified artisans in the flexographic industry. The career pathway is open to all youth labour, school leavers and any technical minded individual that has a flair for design and print and is subject to any physical disabilities, which could hinder the minders performance and safety. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that previously experienced individuals would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience (minimum of 5 years). The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.
