Purpose

The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Operator. A Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Operator conducts Radiographic testing and then interprets whether indications are relevant or non-relevant, according to prescribed procedures. A Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Operator will employ radiographic testing methods, record the results, and escalate anomalies to the Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Technician. A qualified learner will be able to: • Prepare for radiographic testing according to instructions • Conduct radiographic testing and interpret according to prescribed procedures.

Rationale

This part-qualification will equip learners with the necessary skills and competence to operate as Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Operators which would enable them to be recruited as operators by the industry. People employed in non-destructive testing sector are operators responsible to performs radiographic testing and records the results in accordance with a written instruction. Radiographic Testing (RT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method which uses either x-rays or gamma rays to examine the internal structure of manufactured components identifying any flaws or defects. This part-qualification aims to provide learners, education and training providers and employers with the standards and the range of learning required to work effectively making use of non-destructive testing methods to meet the challenges of such an environment. The part-qualification addresses the need as identified in the non-destructive testing sector to ensure that there is a capacity to meet the growth demand of the sector. Typical learners are school leavers, qualifying learners from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges or workers who have been employed in the NDT industry. Learners will receive a high standard of training and education that is occupationally aligned and internationally recognised. In terms of the learning pathway, acquisition of this qualification allows learners to enter the Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Technician (NDT Level II) qualification and move on to become Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Technologists (NDT Level III). This will create a healthy employment cycle providing employment opportunities to unemployed youth who are interested in non-destructive testing. Employers in the sector will gain access to suitably qualified Non-Destructive Testing Radiographic Testing Operators to conduct testing at NDT Level I and this shall bring great benefit to the economy as more qualified Non-Destructive Radiographic Testing Operators and Technicians will be available in industries while these individuals would be benefiting themselves as recruits into the industry thus benefiting their societies. Qualifying learners would be recruited by the industry as Non-Destructive Operators. It is important and a requirement that individuals be qualified as operators before they could be absorbed in the practice by industry hence the need for this part-qualification.
