Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Directional Driller. A Directional Driller operates a drilling machine to drill holes for directional drilling operations primarily in the construction and mining sectors. The drilling machines may be for surface or underground use; are generally rotary hydraulically driven units; may be skid-mounted, truck mounted, wheeled or tracked units; chip or core types, conventional or diamond bit; air or mud drilling. A qualified learner will be able to: • Operate a directional drilling machine for mining and construction operations.

Rationale

Various industry sectors use drilling machines. In particular, directional drilling operations are an essential part of the construction and mining sectors. South African legislation requires persons to be properly trained and assessed competent before operating machines. This qualification will train and develop the qualifying learner with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to ensure drilling machines are operated productively and safely. This will also improve the standard of training and assessment, which will lead to better operations and improved safety and will improve mobility of employment. Most learners will already be employed. The career progression for drillers will be to other machine operator specialisations and to occupations in operations, engineering or training.

Learning Assumed to be in Place & RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning: RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment: Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record. RPL for access to the qualification: Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements. Entry Requirements: • NQF 1 in Communication and Mathematical Literacy.

Exit Level Outcomes
  • Carry-out start and end-of-shift procedures and checks, using knowledge of the workplace and the drilling system, the machine, associated equipment and accessory specifications, operational standards, operating systems and operating procedures; and meet all safety, health and environmental requirements.
  • Operate the drilling system, including the machine, associated equipment and accessories, using knowledge of procedures, drilling systems, the machine, associated equipment and accessories, performance parameters, controls and operating standards, environmental conditions and the mining operation; carry out assigned tasks and respond to changing conditions, safely, effectively and productively; compile and submit reports.
  • Work safely, applying knowledge of procedures, relevant legal and company requirements, hazard identification and risk assessment processes and procedures and environmental and operating conditions.
