Crane or Hoist Operator (Small Winder Operator)

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Small Winder Operator. A Small Winder Operator operates a small winder to transport materials, explosives and minerals to and from the underground workings of a mine. A qualified learner will be able to: • Operate a small winder to transport materials, explosives and minerals to and from the underground workings of a mine.

The Mining industry requires the transportation of materials, explosives and minerals by means of small winders to and from the underground workings of the mine in vertical and/or incline shafts. This qualification makes it possible for individuals to carry out such winding operations using small winders. The qualification also provides a national standard for workplaces to appoint Small Winder Operators to meet the requirements of the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). This qualification has also been developed in anticipation of the occupation becoming regulated by the DMR. This qualification will provide the basis for a licence-to-practice. This forms part of a strategy to improve safety standards in underground mining and emphasises the application of sound hazard identification and risk assessment practices. Most learners will already have been employed in the Mining industry and, after qualifying, will continue to find employment there. This qualification will also improve the standard and consistency of training and assessment across all sites. This will result in better operational quality and safety and improve the mobility of Small Winder Operators. In general the career progression for Small Winder Operators will be to occupations in other aspects of Mining, e.g. Onsetter, Winding Engine Driver or Training, Engineering or Mining Operations.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment: Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record. RPL for access to the qualification: Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements. Entry Requirements: • NQF Level 1 qualification. • Minimum age of 19 years as specified by the Mine Health and Safety Act and related Regulations. • A Medical Certificate of Fitness as specified by the Mine Health and Safety Act and related Regulations.

• Perform winding operations.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the operational activities carried out by the Small Winder Operator.
