Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Brush hand. A Brush Hand must be able to prepare substrates using hand tools, and use brushes, rollers, trowels and rakes to paint substrates, and inspect and use ladders. A Brush Hand operates in either a decorative or industrial painting environment. The learner will complete the applicable work experience modules depending on the context in which they find themselves.

Rationale

This qualification equips learners with the necessary skills and competence to operate as Brush Hands in either a decorative or industrial context. Most of the people employed to carry out painting work in the industry are Brush Hands. Essentially, these people work under the instruction of an Assistant Painter or Painter to carry-out basic painting tasks, using brushes, rollers, trowels and rakes. Typically, learners would be school leavers with an NQF Level 1 qualification or learners who have not had access to structured painting training programmes and with no formal recognised competencies. This part qualification will empower Brush Hands to obtain recognition and give them the level of skills that will increase their opportunities for employment and expertise. Employers will benefit as competent Brush Hands will contribute positively to the productivity of the organisation, especially since mostly Brush Hands are employed in the painting sector.
