Purpose

The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an Annealing Operator. Annealing Operators operate, monitor and control the annealing to operating procedures and within operating limitations, specifications, and meeting health and safety requirements. A qualified learner will be able to: • Perform glass forming operational checks. • Control annealing.

Rationale

This is one of three-part qualifications linked to the Flat Glass Forming Operator qualification. This part-qualification serves as a crucial component of the Flat Glass Operator qualification, specifically targeting the Annealing Operator role. It is designed to address the unique competencies essential for executing Annealing operations within the Flat Glass forming industry. Given the intricate nature of the Annealing process including its operational nuances, the identification and correction of defects, and the maintenance of equipment, there is a considerable demand for a specialised qualification that hones these specific skills. The evolving landscape of modern architecture, automotive manufacturing, and interior design has escalated the demand for skilled personnel capable of producing high-quality Flat Glass products. This part-qualification aims to meet this demand by providing a structured educational pathway focused on Annealing operations, thereby ensuring that these annealing operations are carried out with the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and quality. The industry's shift towards more sustainable and innovative uses of Flat Glass underscores the necessity for a workforce proficient in specialised areas like Annealing. This part-qualification is a response to the industry's call for standardisation in skills and knowledge pertinent to Annealing, ensuring that operators are thoroughly trained. By focusing on the critical aspects of the Annealing process, this qualification lays the groundwork for excellence in production, fostering a culture of safety and quality that benefits the entire glass forming sector. This part-qualification encapsulates the essential knowledge, practical skills, and workplace experience needed for effective performance. It addresses the immediate and specialised requirements of learners aiming to excel in Annealing operations, setting a foundation for future advancement in glass production and related supervisory or engineering roles. The success of the glass industry, especially in regions like South Africa, hinges on the proficiency and competence of its workforce, making this qualification vital for sustaining operational productivity and excellence. The following are glass forming/manufacturing and related qualifications currently registered on the NQF: • Occupational Certificate: Container Glass Forming Operator, NQF Level 2, 108 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Chemical Manufacturing Technician (Glass Manufacturing), NQF Level 5, 234 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Cutter and Edgework Operator, NQF Level 2, 29 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Forming Specialist, NQF Level 04, 64 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Handler, NQF Level 2, 29 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Manufacturing Feederman, NQF Level 4, 48 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Manufacturing Process Technician, NQF Level 3, 64 Credits. • Occupational Certificate: Glass Process Operator, NQF Level 3, 180 Credits. These qualifications as developed through industry lead process, cover separate set of skills related to glass forming/manufacturing and handling than the Occupational Certificate: Annealing Operator, NQF level 2, 71 Credits. It is therefore affirmed that a similar qualification specifically for Annealing Operators is not registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). By establishing a formal part-qualification for Annealing Operators, the Flat Glass sector stands to benefit significantly through the standardisation of practices and the enhancement of workforce competency. This development not only promises to elevate productivity and reduce production discrepancies but also ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality Flat Glass products. The qualification supports the production of Flat Glass that aligns with the goals of sustainable urban development, energy conservation, and the innovation needs of the automotive and interior design industries. Training skilled operators to optimise Annealing processes means less waste, cost efficiency, and the potential for the industry to expand its export capabilities with superior products, thereby contributing to economic growth and job creation in specialised areas. Typical learners are individuals who are keen on entering the glass forming sector. This includes school leavers, those seeking a career shift, or operating personnel working in a glass forming production environment who aim to formalise and certify their skills. This part-qualification will enable qualified learners to competently operate machinery and equipment involved in the production of Flat Glass, cut and shape glass to desired specifications, and inspect the quality of the final product. Typical occupations in which the learner will operate is Annealing operations. Consultation with stakeholders within the glass forming industry was made during the development of this part-qualification.

Learning Assumed to be in Place & RPL

RPL for Access to Training/Exemption: Learners may use the RPL process to gain access to training opportunities for a qualification if they do not meet the formal, minimum entry requirements for admission. RPL assessment provides an alternative access route into a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme. Such an RPL assessment may be developed, moderated and conducted by the accredited Skills Development Provider which offers that specific qualification. Such an assessment must ensure that the learner is able to display the equivalent level of competencies required for access, based on the NQF level descriptors. RPL for exemption from modules: For exemption from modules through RPL, learners who have gained the stipulated competencies of the modules of a qualification through any means of formal, informal or non-formal learning and/or work experience, may be awarded credits towards relevant modules, and gaps identified for training, which is then concluded. RPL for Access to the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA): • Learners who have gained the stipulated competencies of the modules of a qualification through any means of formal, informal, or non-formal learning and/or work experience, may be awarded credits towards relevant modules, and gaps identified for training, which is then concluded. • A valid Statement of Results is required for admission to the EISA in which confirmation of achievement is provided that all internal assessment criteria for all modules in the related curriculum document have been achieved. • Upon successful completion of the EISA, RPL learners will be issued with the QCTO certificate for the qualification. Quality Partners are responsible for ensuring the RPL mechanism and process for qualifications and part-qualification is approved by the QCTO. Entry Requirements: • An NQF Level 1 qualification.

Exit Level Outcomes
  • Apply basic health and safety principles and concepts through on operational procedures, inspections and maintaining documentation within a managed environment.
  • Safely perform annealing operations.
